After 26 years of community mobilization and advocacy efforts, Medicaid access was restored to COFA islanders at the federal level through historic legislation passed in December 2020. This document from the U.S. Health and Human Services Department details the updated guide regarding COFA Medicaid coverage.

This is a huge step towards social justice for the COFA community. Yet, many barriers still exist, and the roll out of this news highlighted a stark difference in Medicaid coverage and benefits in Texas compared to other states, particularly Oregon, Washington, and Hawai’i’, where other communities of COFA residents are concentrated. This is due to the fact that Medicaid expansion - even for United States citizens - is significantly more limited in Texas than in these other states.

CANNT is in communication with the Texas Health and Human Services to improve communication and outreach efforts related to Medicaid restoration and access, since even within the limitations, many COFA islanders are considered eligible for this health coverage. We are also hoping to include and/or develop COFA-language resources to make information more digestible. CANNT is also forming connections with groups like EveryTexan towards this effort. We will continue to share updates as progress is made.
